James Davison will leave Road America empty-handed having been taken out of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race after a super start.
After topping practice for the Road America Johnsonville 180, qualifying was washed out. Davison won Stage Race 1 by over two seconds having led all 10 laps.
When pitting the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota under Caution at the end of the stage, Davison sped while exiting pit road, an offence which saw him put to the rear of the 40 car field. The Australian nevertheless charged back through and was running fifth when he was cannoned into by Justin Marks during the final lap of Stage 2.
Marks had initially been pushed loose by Ross Chastain, while Austin Cindric was also caught up in the incident when he was tagged by the subsequently wounded Davison. The collision ended Davison’s day due to radiator damage and he was classified 37th.
“We were going up the hill there out of 5 and I think (Chastain) got into (Marks) and hooked him across the track. I had nowhere to go. One of those incidents where you’re just an innocent victim." Davison said.
“We had the car to win today but had it slip away. Ultimately it has been a dream ride getting after it with Joe Gibbs Racing. I had a fantastic time working with the team and look forward to our next opportunity in the future".
Hollinger Motorsports, LaSalle Solutions, Lake Forest Hearing and Advexure Drone Dealers were valued sponsors of the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry.
